Before the first attempt
Picking a puzzle that suits you
Which kind of compact puzzle should I start with?
Start with the movement you enjoy. Pocket labyrinths are forgiving and reset instantly; wooden packing puzzles have clear goals; metal puzzles reward precise rotation; puzzle boxes suit explorers. Our comparison table sets them side by side.
Why don't you publish difficulty scores?
Difficulty depends on the person, and makers use their own, non-standard scales. We describe handling, constraints and reset behaviour instead, which you can judge against your own temperament.
Is it cheating to look up a solution?
Not at all, but a full solution skips the moment the mechanism makes sense. Try our layered hints first; they point to where to look rather than what to do.
Looking after small objects
Will a metal puzzle damage my desk or phone?
Bare metal and wire ends can mark soft finishes and screens. Work on a felt mat or a folded cloth, and keep puzzles away from devices in bags.
How do I avoid losing my place?
Leave puzzles on a tray in their current state, lay out pieces in the order they came free, and take quick photos or notes at each stage.
My wooden puzzle has become stiff. What should I do?
Humidity often swells wood. Let it acclimatise in a drier room for a day. Never sand or force pieces; a very light touch of paste wax is the traditional remedy for persistent stiffness.
Travel, family and further reading
Can I take puzzles on a plane?
Small labyrinths and wooden puzzles usually travel well. Rules vary by airport and airline, so check current security guidance before you fly.
Are compact puzzles suitable for children?
Many are, but small parts and steel balls can be choking hazards. Always follow the age guidance printed by the maker.
Where can I learn about puzzle history?
The Jerry Slocum Mechanical Puzzle Collection at the Lilly Library, Indiana University, is one of the largest public puzzle collections. Martin Gardner's recreational mathematics writing is another warm, readable starting point.
